After Deepika Padukone gyrated to a remixed version of Dev Anand’s classic Hare Rama Hare Krishna song, Dum maaro dum… it’s now item girl Yana’s turn to step into yesteryear’s leading lady Zeenat Aman’s shoes. She’s shot a video for the remixed version of Laila, oh Laila… the Qurbani chartbuster, in Chalo Dilli.
However, producers Lara Dutta and Eros, were in two minds about adding the song to the film. Focus groups were conducted last summer, and results suggested that the item number should be added to the story. “So, we acquired rights to rework the track,” says Ram Mirchandani, chief creative officer, Eros International.
Unlike filmmaker Dev Anand, who expressed displeasure against the Dum maaro dum… remix, Zeenat is more relaxed. “If today’s generation wants to incorporate cult-hit numbers in their movies, one can’t blame them,” she says, adding a word of caution. “As long as it’s done aesthetically, I don’t mind remixes. But it brings distaste to an artiste when his or her hit is retouched and turned into a tacky-sounding number.”
