The 24th Annual Miss India-Canada beauty pageant will be held here on Saturday, August 16, at the International Plaza Hotel in Toronto.
Sponsored by Chevrolet, the beauty pageant will accept applications from contestants till June 27.
The premier beauty pageant of the fast growing Indo-Canadian community, the Miss India-Canada event is also being sponsored by Sears, Bigen Speedy Hair Colour and Om Financial, to name a few.
Contestants compete in dance, music, their ability to speak in public and quiz rounds before a panel of judges picks up the winner. The pageant is focused on Indian culture and traditions woven into the Canadian mosaic.
Some of the past winners have gone on to become major names. These include Kamal Sidhu, Ruby Bhatia, Gita Bali, Rishma Malik, Poonam Chhibber, Melissa Bhagat, and Komila (Kim) Jagtiani.
The winner of the first Miss India-Canada pageant, Kamal Sidhu, went on to become a VJ and star in the Bollywood film Aar Ya Paar. Miss India-Canada 2001 Neelam Verma was crowned Miss Canadian Universe. She represented Canada in the Miss Universe pageant in Puerto Rico and was selected amongst the Top 10 in the world.
Rishma Malik, Miss India-Canada 1996 starred in Deepa Mehta’s “Bollywood Hollywood” movie. Last year, Parul Sharma, Miss India-Canada 2004 sang the Canadian and US national anthems before a sold out Toronto Raptors NBA basketball game.
