Family members of a 20-year-old maid, who died after she was allegedly thrown off the 8th floor of an apartment at Sector 49 in Noida on Sunday, have been traced in Latehar.
The maid, identified as Kaleshari aka Babita, hailed from Hoor village, 100km west of the state capital, in Herhanj block of Latehar district. The eldest daughter among four children of her family, she had been serving as the maid for the past three years.
The incident highlights the suffering of the trafficked girls of Jharkhand who are taken to metro cities in the name of providing employment but often end up as bonded labourers after being sold by middlemen operating as placement agents.
The district administration searched for her family members on Sunday night following an alert by the state social welfare secretary Mridula Sinha. Balumath circle officer Dheeraj Thakur was leading the search in Balumath and Herhanj areas.
Quoting family members, Thakur said, “The victim was locally known as Kaleshari Kumari. Eldest daughter of a poor tribal Birju Oraon, she belonged to Masilong Tola of Hoor village in Herhanj block. She had been working there as a maid for the past three years.”
Thakur said the family members were initially told that their daughter had died after falling off the 8th floor while feeding pigeons. “However, the family refused to buy this version. The girl’s uncle along with other relatives rushed to Delhi,” said the CO.
Asked about the people who took the victims to Delhi, Thakur said, “This could not be ascertained now as family members were not sure about it.”
Herhanj, one of the most underdeveloped blocks of the state, had earlier hogged limelight after the CPI (Maoists) forcibly inducted minor children in the guerrilla squad and a 10-year-old boy was blown off while undergoing training in planting improvised explosive devices in 2013.
