VRINDAVAN: Union minister of state for external affairs General V K Singh (Retd) on Saturday said there was no difference between JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and deceased scholar Rohit Vemula as, “one supports Afzal Guru and the other had backed Mumbai blast convict Yakub Memon”.
Reacting to a speech made by Kanhaiya after his release on Thursday, wherein he stated that his idol was not Afzal Guru but Vemula, Singh said the statement was an admission of support for Yakub Memon, since the latter was among the organisers of a rally at University of Hyderabad to back the Mumbai blast convict. Singh who was speaking at the BJYM national convention here, said, “Are we with those people who encourage terrorism and who abuse India?”
Singh’s remarks come at a time when BJP is trying hard to play down the row over Vemula’s suicide.
The former Army chief called upon BJP’s youth workers to spread “nationalism and tell people how to take the country ahead when fissiparous forces” are at work.
The MoS also spoke at length about the Modi government’s foreign policy and said the government, had succeeded in strengthening its relations with many countries, including neighbours like Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar. “Every country wants Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit it due to his popularity,” General Singh added.
