Excessive Cell Phone Use Linked To Cancer, Genetic Mutations

Washington:  Excessive use of mobile phone can lead to oxidative stress in cells that is linked to cellular and genetic mutations which cause development of tumors, says a study.

Oxidative stress is a process that damages all aspects of a human cell, including DNA, through the development of toxic peroxide and free radicals.

Dr. Yaniv Hamzany of Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine and the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Department at the Rabin Medical Center looked for clues in the saliva of cell phone users to further explore the relationship between cancer rates and cell phone use.

Since the cell phone is placed close to the salivary gland when in use, he and his fellow researchers, including departmental colleagues Profs. Raphael Feinmesser and Thomas Shpitzer and Dr. Gideon Bahar and Prof. Rafi Nagler and Dr. Moshe Gavish of the Technion in Haifa, hypothesised that salivary content could reveal whether there was a connection to developing cancer, reports Science Daily.

Comparing heavy mobile phone users to non-users, they found that the saliva of heavy users showed indications of higher oxidative stress. More importantly, it is considered a major risk factor for cancer.

The findings have been reported in the journal Antioxidants and Redox Signaling.

That stops the complicated adjustments that snipers have to make for wind, weather, the dip of the bullet as it flies through the air and any movement by the target, and could mean that snipers’ targets could be hit from much further away.

The United States Department of Defense has successfully tested a bullet that can change direction after it has been fired, apparently using fins built into the shell to direct it in the air and account for wind and targets moving.

The Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance weapon, known as Exacto, is made by American industrial company Teledyne Technologies. The firm is making the bullet for the American government’s military research agency, Darpa.

A video made by the company shows the bullet being fired twice, deliberately off target. The second time it swings back in towards the target and hits.

The companies involve have not disclosed how the bullet works, but it is thought to have small fins that re-direct its path. The sniper shines a laser at the target, which the bullet then follows as it moves through the air.

The record kill by a sniper rifle stands at 8,120 feet. That was achieved by UK soldier Craig Harrison  in 2010, in Afghanistan.

Firefox hopes to regain some marketshare by history-wiping ‘Forget’ button.

Feeling ashamed of your latest Kim Kardashian news binge? The latest version of Firefox can easily forget all about it.

Firefox version 33.1 adds a new button called “Forget,” which lets users wipe only their most recent browsing history and cookies. Users can choose to forget the last 5 minutes, 2 hours or 24 hours of activity, while preserving all history and cookies prior to that timeframe.

Firefox has long offered a Private Browsing feature, which wipes all history and cookies once users close the private window. But that requires planning ahead. For users who browse normally and later realize they’d like to erase some evidence, they previously had to dig into the tools menu to find the “Clear Recent History” option. The Forget button brings some of those history-clearing options to the main toolbar, making them accessible with just a couple of clicks. It also takes the extra step of closing all current windows and opening a fresh one in their place.

Why this matters: Firefox’s market share has been trending downward for years as more people turn to Google Chrome, and efforts like an open Web app store andcustomizable interface have done little to boost the browser’s relevance. But the privacy angle is a compelling one, and even if it doesn’t reverse Firefox’s dwindling usage share, it at least gives users a reason to consider Firefox once again.

India getting high on twitter

New Delhi: In this age of a rapidly changing world, micro-blogging site Twitter is fast catching the fancy of Indians and as “news happens on Twitter, news breaks on Twitter”, the US-based company is very bullish on this country.

“With Twitter, anyone can share ideas with the whole world. Twitter is uniquely positioned to do that. The media industry understands Twitter is a companion to its business,” Rishi Jaitly, market director, South & Southeast Asia at Twitter told in an interview.

Globally, Twitter has 284 million monthly active users. Of those, over 77 percent are outside the United States. India is one of the fastest growing markets. The company declined to share any country-specific data.

Talking about 2014 and the rising popularity of Twitter, Jaitly said: “Twitter entered the Indian market a couple of years back. When we entered we knew 2014 will be an important year for us as there will be Lok Sabha elections and IPL during the year.”

“In India we have immersed ourselves with the media business. We have engaged ourselves with the ministry (of information and broadcasting, TV channels and leading stakeholders in the audience business,” he added.

Describing Twitter as a “mobile microphone”, Jaitly said it has given voice to people across the country.

“Our goal is to ensure every Indian with a mobile device is deriving value from Twitter every single day. There is space and relevance for everyone on the platform, whether you’re an FMCG brand, an automobile brand or a spiritual leader. We’ve seen that users in India tend to take to Twitter around news, politics, cricket and entertainment,” Jaitly said.

With 8.5 million followers, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently the second most-followed political leader in the world after US President Barack Obama and continues to grow his followers at a rapid pace, Twitter’s data on 2014 shows.

The “Golden Tweet” of 2014 was Modi’s declaration of victory May 16, 2014 gaining 70,519 retweets celebrating his win.

In India in the last 18 months, there was 600 percent increase in conversations, with politics, governance and public issues being the most talked about, Jaitly said.

He was very optimistic about India and felt there are more opportunities awaiting in 2015. “In 2015 there will be cricket World Cup. We will concentrate more on partnerships and ensuring that businesses across India see values in Twitter.”
