‘I wasn’t calm on the inside’: Duminy

Dubai: Contrary to what fans and commentators may have felt while watching JP Duminy guide Delhi Daredevils to a tense chase of 166 against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday night, the match-winner himself has admitted to being anything but cool as he went about his job in ice-veined manner.

“I wasn’t calm in the inside, that’s for sure,” said Duminy after DD’s four-wicket win with three deliveries remaining. “It is just about being smart on how we went about it and not trying to do everything but by myself. It’s a partnership out there and luckily for us it worked out.”

Having walked out at No 5 at the fall of Ross Taylor off the last ball of the seventh over, with DD’s total reading 60 for 3, Duminy initially played second to a gung-ho Dinesh Karthik. But once his captain departed for a perky 56, Duminy shifted gears superbly with some excellent shots all around the wicket. The highlight of his innings was the 18th over bowled by his South Africa team-mate Morne Morkel, whom he swung for a four and two successive sixes to the leg side. Against Sunil Narine, however, he had been very watchful, scoring seven runs off 11 balls faced from the all-sorts spinner.

“I think you’ve got a target set against bowlers. As anyone would know, Narine is not the easiest to get away with. I was lucky to get one up against (Morkel) today. Next day he might try and target my head,” said Duminy with a smile.
Karthik had only praise for Duminy. “He is a super person. He is key to our batting. The key for him would be to take his form in the upcoming games and keep going,” he said.

Following defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore, and still without their first-choice skipper in Kevin Pietersen, Daredevils have finally got points on the IPL board and Karthik hoped it was a sign of better days for the team that finished last in 2013. “It’s one on the board. Let’s take it slow,” he said. “I wanted to do well for the team. Every game is important and today it came off. It’s a good start. the boys are all pumped up. We have a solid coach which does not get excited.”

Keeping calm in tense moments could end up being Daredevils’ defining trait in 2014 if they keep winning such matches.
